Easypress' predictions for the publishing industry in 2025.

The publishing industry is set for significant changes in 2025, from the continued rise of AI to a renewed focus on accessibility. This blog explores the challenges shaping the future, offering our predictions for the year ahead.

Accessibility

The legal enforcement of the European Accessibility Act (EAA) – the long-awaited mandate for accessible digital content – is upon us. The 28th June 2025 is expected to mark a significant industry shift towards the creation of compliant digital material; we predict that publishers will be busy updating backlist titles to meet these new requirements. For some, this will be more of a challenge than for others!

AI

Although 2025 will see the continued development of AI, the necessary regulations to protect the rights of publishers and authors will undoubtedly continue to lag. 2025 must see tighter restrictions and more effective protective measures put in place for authors and their content. However, AI could also help publishers predict cultural shifts and emerging reader preferences throughout the next twelve months.

BookTok

The impending TikTok ban in the US, set for 19th January 2025, is expected to disrupt viral trends like #BookTok, reducing their influence on the publishing industry. The ban could affect global YA readership and book sales. However, outside the US, online communities such as #BookTok will continue driving demand, helping to offset the decline of reading for pleasure among children.

Streaming and Subscription Services

Consumer habits will keep evolving, mirroring the desire for on-demand access. Streaming and subscription services will change pricing models for print books, eBooks and audiobooks. Traditional methods of purchasing content will face increasing pressure from online services in 2025, with pricing influenced more by the platform than the format.

PAYE Changes

In the UK Employer NIC Tax has risen from 13.8% to 15% with a lower secondary threshold of £5,000.00, leading to higher payroll expenses. While the Employment Allowance will increase to £10,500.00, its impact may be felt for larger payrolls. Big publishers will face tough decisions ahead on rising staff costs; they will need to find ways to manage rising costs while protecting the quality and scope of their work in an increasingly challenging financial landscape.

Publishers: Doing More with Less

Publishing more content with fewer resources is a key 2025 target for many within the industry – some even being tasked with increasing productivity by up to 40% during times of company-wide employment freezes.

With ever-stretched budgets, the pressure will also be on publishers to reduce production costs without compromising quality. Given that additional resources will be required to ensure EEA standards are met for digital content, 2025 could be a tough year for many publishing professionals.

The only way to achieve more with less in book publishing – without placing overwhelming stress on employees – may be to invest in automation and improved technology to increase staff productivity. Streamlining workflows through digital tools can enhance efficiency and reduce repetitive tasks, allowing staff to focus on creative and strategic work. Higher productivity must be on the agenda for every publishing company to ensure better business margins and profitability.

Book Bans

The shocking rise of book banning in the US will challenge publishers, particularly those focused on diverse and inclusive titles. Books addressing race, sexuality and gender are likely to face reduced sales in affected regions. For larger publishers, the bans may strain relationships with libraries and educators, historically vital markets.

The question is whether this will limit publishers' ability to support marginalised voices – navigating this climate will require a commitment to intellectual freedom to prevent authors and publishers shying away from controversial topics.

The Reading Gap

According to research published by The National Literacy Trust (NLT), children and young people’s enjoyment of reading has fallen to its lowest level in almost two decades. Only one in three eight to 18-year-olds say they enjoy reading in their spare time, according to a survey of over 76,000 UK children National Literacy Trust.

To counteract this, the publishing industry may need to innovate – exploring partnerships with schools to reignite enthusiasm for books. Publishers might also focus on creating stories that resonate with contemporary readers and their experience of a rapidly changing world.

Trends

Finally, the rise of genre fiction is likely to continue in 2025. The popularity of fantasy, thrillers and romances has surged as social media trends like #BookTok have created vibrant fan communities.

Moreover, the success of adaptations in streaming has brought new audiences to genre fiction. For the publishing industry, this could mean a stronger focus on developing series, cross-media collaborations, and franchises. Publishers are also likely to nurture niche communities through targeted marketing.

Throughout the next year, publishers are undoubtably going to be challenged to adapt to new technologies and market dynamics. Whether taking a stronger stance on AI, experimenting with TikTok ads or embracing accessibility, the next twelve months will shake up the industry!
